Cartier Jewelers - A family business for over one hundred years
Cartier was founded in 1847 by the goldsmith, Louis-Francois Cartier (1819-1904). Hewas a jewelry supplier in the high-class Parisian society. His grandson, Louis Cartier (1875–1942) and son of Alfred, took over the company and expanded it into a global jewelry empire with his two other brothers, Pierre and Jacques. While family's watch business specialized in pocket watches and added greatly to their increased popularity in the late 1800s, the company's watch business launched the first men's wristwatch around 1905 after Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont requested that he design a watch for use during flights. In the 1920s Edward Jaeger (of the famous Jaeger Le Coulture watch company) started supplying movements for Cartier watches.
Cartier continued to introduce find wristwatches in the early 1900s, including teh Baignoire and Tortue in 1912, the Tank in 1917 and Pasha of Marrakesh in 1932. During this time period the company started stamping four-digit number codes on the back of its watches. Collectors today will often refuse a watch of those numbers are not present. Following the death of Louis in 1942 his brother Pierre took over the business in 1945. By this time the company was one of the biggest luxury watch makers in the world with stores in London, New York, Hong Kong, Geneva, Cannes, Monte Carlo and the Persian Gulf.
The successors of Louis Cartier did not have the creative talent of Louis and the company lost its strength in the 1950s-1960s. It was not until 1972 when a group of investors led by Alain Perrin and Robert Hocq took over the company that it started to regain market share. Under the leadership of Perrin and Hocq, the company launched the successful Le Must line and re-launched former successful classic watches such as the Santos. Today Cartier has regained its position as one of the leading makers of luxury watches in the world, with its most successful watches including the classic Tank, the trendy and sporty Tank Francaise which was designed after the Santos, and the ladies Pasha and beautiful Cartier Panther.
